Tink:

Boyo it’d be nice to be so knowledgeable, confident and just damn certain that your opinions never needed to undergo a little scrutiny now and then. I sure wish my life was so well put together.

Since leaving Christianity, I have become certain of one thing. I am wrong about many things. Many of my current, non-Christian beliefs and assumptions are wrong. And so are yours. Something that you know is wrong. Just show me where it is, show me where I am wrong, and why I am wrong, and I will change the error of my ways. I will learn from my mistaken thinking. I mature, I grow and I move on.

I am not a Christian, and I am not certain. Except that I am certainly wrong about some things. And I am now humble enough to admit that.

Wow, that was so good. I love the idea that, "I state my opinion to have it challenged. So I can learn. So I can rid myself of faulty beliefs and ideas. So I can allow what I do believe to be distilled, fortified and enriched." That is exactly why I do it. I wish everyone did.

Well put. As I was reading this, it came to me: What is a BELIEF? It's something that either isn't known for sure, or isn't knowable at all. Either way, by it's very definition a belief must be open to challenge.

how timely! i have been talking to a christian lately about religious philosophy, and this totally describes how he has responded. And with religion, it's not only that the christian will not back down or allow their beliefs to be rightly challenged-- they wont just let the non-christian be! every time i have tried to talk to my christian friends about faith, they spend the whole time trying to hold my hand and guide me back to the faith. maybe that makes them good christians, or maybe just annoying. but they ignore the heart of the discussion every, single time...
great post!
